Dude some of your info is correct, the verts had the 4.39 because they are the heaviest cars and are driven slower than hard tops, the 4.39 is available new from Japan, I priced one up last week and it was pretty reasonable actually.

There is also a 3.5 ratio which is 74/21, I just pulled a box apart in the weekend so if you want it send me a 4.1 and I'll send you the 3.5...

Any of the non-turbo cars with 13" wheels had the 4.39. It makes the final drive the same as 4.11 with 12's.

Just found out that the 3.5 diff won't fit into the later gearbox due to countershaft differences, looks like 3.9 is the lowest you can get in a MK2/3 box...

a 3.5 diff sounds pretty interesting, what sort of mk1 did it come out of ? some taller highway gearing may be nice without having to increase the tire size, but i'm pretty sure the mk1 t3 diff is the only 4 pinion model, so anything else is going to be weaker.

My 1992 Swift had a 3.5 diff. I even counted the teeth:

Yea, my 92 sedan had a 3.523 until I swapped the swift gt eng/trans combo in. But now my tranny is shot, (look, I'm retarded a diff pin) and I have to switch back... My sedan originally came with 165/65R13s, but with 185/60R14s I was still getting an honest 45mpg from my sohc 1.3 after 210000km.

Hi ppl,

There are few of them about for mk1.
G10 engined AA43S (mk1 turbo?) has 3.523, 4.105 and 4.388.
G10 std mk1 with 3.789.
G13B gti with 4.105.

All these are from Jap service manual for mk1.

my GTI has 14" tires on it and a fried auto. want to get a tranny to put in it, how can you tell what jdm trannys have the 4.39 ratio?

convertibles have the 4.39:1 transmissions. the individual gear ratios are spaced a bit differently to work best with the 3 banger's rev ranges and power delivery.

chuckwagon is running one in his GT and it's great. i'm running one with my turbo3 engine and it's just perfect.

you'll have to monkey around with the rear mount or use one from a GT to install it in a GT so keep your eyes open for that, too.

OK yeah I made a general statement there based on the fact that all verts weigh more than the hardtop version on which they are based, without the eggshell effect verts usually have 50-100lbs of extra bracing to stiffen the chassis (all cars not just swifts), with the low weight of swifts all the 'extra's' and different engine weights makes more of difference than the extra 50 odd lbs (estimated) extra bracing due to lack of roof...

what do the jdm transmisions have for a final drive ratio, im looking for a 4.10 or a 4.39 for my gti and i can get a jdm tranny for $100 but won't do me much good is gear ratio is wrong and people selling them have no idea what they are

also what would a stock G10 90 metro have for a gear ratio and is the spline/input shaft the same as the swift gti one?

a standard geo hatchback should have a 3.89:1 tranny and the input shaft would match up fine.

When using a gear ratio, RPM, MPH formula posted by Superf1y elsewhere on the forum, I come up with a 4.39 ratio for my 93 G10 5spd Metro? That is with 145-80-12's. I am doing about 4000 RPM at 75 MPH.

If it was a 3.89 ratio final drive I would be doing 87 MPH at 4000 RPM.

Maybe not all coupes came with 3.89's?

if the stock metro comes with a 3.89 tranny what does the xfi come with, same tires but its turning a lot less rpms at 70 than my standard metro does?

don't know what to tell you except that the 4.39:1 ratio was only put in the verts. gts and turbo cars got 4.10:1, and standard metros got 3.89:1. i read the factory specs on the cars which gave the gearbox ratios. unless the factory manuals are in error, that's the poop.

maybe your car got a tranny swap to one from a vert. the xfi was the super gas miser model and i would think that they would have gotten the highest ratio trannies to turn the fewest rpms in high gear to save fuel.
