Album - 1967 SAAB Sonett II

the logo speaks of SAAB's heritage as an aircraft manufacturer. when they shifted to building cars after WWII, the aircraft engineers built the most efficient systems in automotive history. the crash testing of this model gave them bragging rights as the world's safest car, wrested from volvo in later years, but this car set the standard.

the 90 degree transaxle in this car holds the title as the most efficient automobile transmission ever used in a production vehicle.
it was a different time.

classic buggy eyed nose.
the wind drag co-efficient of this body was the lowest of any car built until 1974 - 0.27.
the entire drive train was in this hole. the schnurle principle 2 stroke engine was tweaked and peaked, fitted with custom oversized 2 ring pistons, used an oil injection pump, had a press fitted crankshaft, and hemispherical combustion chambers. it dyno'd at 126 hp @ 6200 rpm, 120 ft/lbs.
this was the factory's secret weapon for tuning the 3 banger. the 3 carbs shared a single triple throttle body that had the fuel enrichment style choke. the swirl type airbox was a state of the art tuning feature that was borrowed from airplane engine designs.

even more rare than the car are the tunnewerken cast magnesium wheels. they only produced a total of 200 rims. these included the original centers and were shod with 155r/ 15 pirelli cinturato tires.

the wheels were true magnesium alloy, very stiff but very brittle. i bead blasted them and let them season to acquire the natural magnesium patina.
the fiberglass body is in five pieces - doors, hatch, body, and hood.
while not factory stock, the talbot mirrors are vintage period correct, sleek, and rocket-like.
dad's in blue, i'm in black, the new owner is in the car.

yep, that's a four on the tree shifter. it ran a staggered H shift pattern. to catch reverse you pull the knob out away from the steering column, back towards you, and down.
