When I bought my 91 vert I saw a great video clip on youtube, demonstrating how to put the roof down and back up. It was very helpful.

Hold them up, away from the lowered roof so you do not tear the roof's weather stripping. I did that, my first time, and managed to use contact cement to repair it. Very lucky!
