it should work on any old laptop with a stereo input jack (mic or input, but some mic inputs are mono only) There are complicated ways around to making java run on older machines, but it should be atleast be able to run windows 98 and up.
I am am unsure of the accuracy, since I didnt use it for too long, (i got bored with the project, and didnt feel like carrying a laptop with me in the car)

I dont think it is accurate when it comes to throttle , vacuum, and fuel pressure, which does have some affect on mpg. This only calculates an mpg from the speed of the car, and how many times the injector fires.

Ok question. You tapped the signal wire on one FI. What is the voltage of that FI.

I hooked this up in a blazer.

What connections are made to the stereo plug?

VSS tip?
FIS Side?

When driving the VSS says 180mph+ I wish

The MPG Instant say 4mpg but when stop or in park it is 50+mph?

What does your FI sensor read. Mine voltage decreases on acceleration. It also use the ground to fluctuate the FI. Power is always on and it seems to use an adjustable resistance/ground for controlling the FI.

OK to state the obvious, OK on a tbi model but what about multipoint injection? pick the signal off of a single injector? calibrate by a factor of four?

I just joined this site...and in browsing around, I came across this thread.
Many of us (most?) who drive / want a MPG gauge but don't "speak the language" of electronics ... Jimmy Clark was a sheep rancher ... have a good way out of this dilemma : Buy a ScanGauge! It's a little pricy, but seems sound and bulletproof.

I don't draft that close maybe 150 ft back. My vacuum gauge shows when I am in draft. I didn't say a semi to tailgate.


Scangauge is only for 96+ vehicle that is the reason for a DIY one for 96- vehicles.

Hey mpmetro what Diodes did you use? I know the resistors are 10k but what are the diodes?

I would suggest that you use 4n25 opto-isolators in the line to your sound card. That would prevent any change of putting 12v on the line in leads (although it might not hurt it anyway).

My Rhinoview software for OBD1 Suzuki vehicles displays mpg. No need to hack the wiring about if there is a diagnostic port available.
