Would putting these (claimed 120/95watt) piaa headlights be too much current for our cars and burn up the headlight harness? I know our cars come with a 65/45watt setup and some still have problems. I was thinking of adding a dual relay harness system to the car. I most llikely will be buying the glass headlight/clear corner lights this tax return time. So the plug type will change regardless.

What do you think the best route is?

piaa bulbs work fine, but a relay upgrade will help. even the stock bulbs do way better at 14 volts.

i would advise against installing the high wattage headlight lamps without a separate wiring harness and relays. the danger is not so much the wiring harness as much as it is the combination switch on the steering column which will have to conduct all the current.

the oem wiring and fusing supports a max of 8 amps at 12 vdc per headlight. the oem lamps are 55/55 watts. 55 watts divided by 12 vdc comes out at 4.58 amps. the 120 watt lamps will pull 10 amps - considerably over the headlight circuit design.

i used the euro e code glass headlights with a 55 watt hi/lo hid lamp system in my red vert and i have never had better headlights on any car. the hid kit came with the aux wiring and relay and only uses the factory wiring as a steering circuit for the relay/ ballast components, not over 1 amp of draw on the oem wiring.

also, at 20 amps for headlights alone with the piaa halogens you will be taxing the alternator and battery. for enhanced lighting you should consider the cs130 105 amp alternator upgrade.

In many places higher wattage headlights are illegal.

I did run some 80/100's with Bosch lenses in a Beetle many tears back. Great light but almost every car thought I had my high beams on and I was constantly (I mean constantly) getting flashed. Not worth the headaches.

I did the relay upgrade in my last swift..it was incredible vision at night!

t3 ragtop sums it up best piaa bulbs are dot compliant. but I found that after 2 years of use they were not as bright as new. filaments do wear out over time, even faster for brighter bulbs.
HID is an awesome upgrade

I guess I will have to wait untill tax time, or save up the cash to buy the glass headlights with quality hid lights. Thank you guys for your help. I have onky had one metro/swift that had the connector and the fuse panel ground burn up. I ended up putting a new old stock switch and added a jumper with a full high low relay kit. It didn't seem to make much of a difference on lighting. at least on that metro.

Another thing I also thought about was to do the corolla lights off eBay and do a projector conversion on them with 55w hid lights.

The piaa bulbs run the stock wattage. But put out equivalent to 90/120. They are a nice upgrade. But if you want to see everything just go right to hid. Also if you have the plastic lenses do a restore on them. Or nothing will really help

I have already cleaned the headlights and clearcoated them. They are go to go for now. Im just trying to figure out what I should do to the car next. Cs130 or the headlights for now.

here n Egypt we used to do what you are talking about
in my Suzuki I'm using Philips Rally Vision with dual relay and completely external harness connected to battery
this gives me intense lighting in severe conditions, these lamps wattage is about 100/90 Watts

If you rewire you can run any wattage you want depending on the gauge of the wire. My driving lights are 100w with 55w fog lights and my hid's.

Bought Hi/Lo HID kit with bulbs, relays, harness, and adapter last year for $50. Basically its a "bolt on" installation so easy. Hardest part was figuring where to mount the relays. Aimed my head lights 4" down and driver side 2 inch in at 25'. State law is 2" down.

Im gonna do a relay harness for it nevertheless. Seeing many geos and swifts with burn connectors, I just want to steer clear and add a relay harness. I dont know which route I want to go, either corolla headlights with projectors and hid retrofit, or the glass headlights with hid lights.
