one of our members, fainya down in texas, performs service rebuilds on our cars' distributors.
i have had him do several for my twincam engines and a mk3 g10. as you know i can be pretty particular with my machinery and i generally spare no expense to do things correctly.
fainya's distributors exceed any specification i might have. i send him an oily lump and he sends me back a distributor that looks like a new unit. he disassembles the distributor, cleans it, bead blasts the case, inspects and polishes the shaft, replaces the bearing and shaft seal, checks the unit's curve, and reassembles it with a new o-ring and cap seal.
i understand that he also checks the mechanical advance mechanism, springs, and breaker plate operation and tests the vacuum advance pots on the older distributors.
he charged me a basic rate of $50 which included return shipping. in case you don't recognize the value of that fee, a new distributor costs over $300 and a reconditioned distributor is usually over $200.
i highly recommend this service for any distributor with over 80k miles or older than 10 years. the twincam engine i just put together for my white gt got a fainya rebuilt distributor and it runs like a swiss watch. send him a pm.
