 Post subject: vin breakdown?

i searched with little result.
can anyone tell me how to tell the difference by vin or chassis # in a 89-94 swift SOHC or DOHC.
i think AS35S is a sohc but i am just guessing. :roll:

You have a car with an AS35S chassis tag?

My '93 1.3 SOHC carries an SF413 tag, and I've noticed that quite a few Google searches on SF413 will also return information on both AA35S & AB35S, both of which also appear to be 1.3 SOHC, but I have never come across an AS35S

Every vehicle built or shipped to the United States has a seventeen number identification number, which is called the VIN, short for Vehicle Identification Number. This number codes many characteristics and information regarding your motor vehicle.

thanks, i have been loking through for sale ads & most list vin #. so the
AA34S is the info i needed to determine SOHC vs DOHC :D

Sorry to bump this ancient thread but close what I am trying to find out... even my useless ancient post is kinda helpful. :lol:

I am trying to decode the VIN and find out why I have damn unique "C." :huh:

The VIN, I am trying to check is [REMOVED].

as far as I research... I believe.

SF413 is chassis type (MK2 and MK3) but is it actually VIN? I don't think so.
BTW SA413 is MK1.

This VIN will contain some type of swift.

Not sure why MK1 have two size of engines.
XXXXX, AB515, SA413 FWD 4 cylinder 1324cc, 1984 - 1987 = MK1
AA33S, AB33S, SA413, 4 cylinder 1298cc, 1986 - 1988 = MK1

AA34S, AB34S, SF413, 4 cylinder 1298cc, 1989 -1990 = MK2

AF34S = AWD (I don't know if it's true) A = FWD and F = AWD... maybe... :o

AA35S, AB35S = [WRONG] MK3??? I guess?[WRONG] both 34 and 35 could be mk2 or mk3

[WRONG]I also suspect that B is Cultus (Japan spec) while A is non Japan spec.[/WRONG]

Again I don't see type engine... only chassis.

the aftermarket supply crowd uses sf413 as a designation of the chassis with other descriptors for the suspension and power train. the same is true for the sa413 designation.

the mk1 cars came outfitted with the g13k dohc 16v engine, the g10 3 banger with the rocker type head, and the g10t for the american domestic market turbo cars.

the mk2, premiered in the 1989 sales year, was designated the sf413 chassis with permutations according to trim level, suspension level, and power train level. accordingly, variants of the sf413 run from the base model g10 with no sway bars and 12 inch wheels to the gt with the highest trim level and hidden options like grey tinted glass, fog lights, rear wiper and defogger, the g13b dohc 16v engine, a full house suspension, and 14 inch wheels. in between were several other variants of the same chassis.

to add to the confusion there was also the convertible and in the canadian domestic market only, the turbo3 cars which had unique trim - striped seats in blue or red, and performance features shared by other variants like brakes.

the awd drive cars you referred to actually did exist in world markets. also in world markets the sf413 chassis remained in service far beyond its end production for the north american domestic market at the end of the 1994 model year. the swift was still in active production in a couple of plants in eastern europe up until 5 or 6 years ago.

The decoder is from the introduction section of the 1989 GTi manual.

If the VIN you want to decode starts with: JS2AC35S0R

JS2 means your car was built in Japan by Suzuki
A means car line A
C means series C
3 means engine 3
5 means design sequence value
S means S type body
0 is check digit
R means 1994 (0 and Q are not used)

The AA34S were the 2wd 3 door cars
The AB34S were the 2wd 4 and 5 door cars.
The AF34S were the 4wd cars
The AK34S were the convertibles

My guess is the letters not listed above were country specific versions.. Maybe the C was USA spec cars.

There is another issue that bothers me... why 3? I know non Gti doesn't have DOHC engine so why3?

Why was the engine code 3?

because engine code 3 means the engine was a 4 cylinder.
and engine code 4 means the engine was a 3 cylinder.

The different variants of each engine code.. with different valve counts, turbo, multiple cams. etc. were specified using a sub model numbering scheme.

I think there is a huge old thread somewhere on TeamSwift archives that covers VINs.. Everyone that contributed to it and took the time to read it had a huge headache afterwards.. in fact... my head is spinning now..
