well liam/murr gave some great ideas on how to adapt a nice big rx7 oil cooler, but i don't have access to all his machining & workshop goodies in the new place. i haven't been able to find any sort of spin on oil line/filter adapters yet on ebay (i've been searching for ford ones primarily as the 302/5.0L oil filters are supposed to fit our swifts.) ..
any suggestions for the least expensive or easiest methods of installing an oil cooler ?
ps. on a side note, check out liams msn photo album for some pics of the rx7 setup, looks like a nice fit w/ his old swift hood setup.

Have a look at a lot of bigger cars with auto boxes at your wreckers....lots here have nice little auto tranny oil coolers....same should go for over your way.

I know my old V8 did.

Hey bud. The Ford spin on adapter works. The size of the fitting is 3/4x16. I run one on my car. I use #8 ss line with Earl's fittings over to a remote mount filter. Then I use the big PH8 Fram filter. Sorry no pictures.

Hey Jardamuth please post a pic and how much, Nitro1 the first generation GSXR bikes were oil cooled ,not water cooled and would work nice and should be cheep used, they were disigned for max cooling of oil.

ok so jardamuth has adapters, murr has hoses, qwall has a cooler of sorts, but how hard is it to get everything to fit together ? do you need proper hydraulic fittings & hoses, can you get by w/ just hose clamps, is it expensive to get the lines & fittings ?
it's not like i've seen any basic bolt on kits for our cars yet like this
Image
however i'm sure you could probably just get one for a ford mustang ..

ok, so to answer my own questions ...
i found one company out of the uk ( http://www.thinkauto.com/index.htm )so far that supplies an oil cooler kit for the suzuki swift available with either regular black hoses (OCI2435) for about £39.33
Image
they also have coolers for about the same price, i've emailed them asking about shipping costs & if they include temperature regulators with their kits .. like the built in one in the rx7 oil cooler like murr was using.
i'll post their response when i hear back

Ok, here's my opinion.

There is several ways to install an oil cooler on a swift. The most efficient is to have the entire oil volume from the pump output to be cooled before entering the engine again. Be carefull when you choose a oil cooler because most tranny coolers have 5/16" I.D lines wich create restriction. A good oil cooler must have lines with a inner diameter of 3/8" at the least or else you engine will seriously be starving oil at top revs. I think Baldurg explained a method to do a external oil filter system without filter adaptor. You need to remove the pump cover and tap 1/4npt threads inside the main oil line to block it completely. Then you take te pressure from a 1/4npt plug that sit on the pump cover. You send the pressure in the filter and your cooler before sending it back in the middle of the stock filter seat, just like I did.

Image

1- Pump housing-pressure output.
2- Internal oil line feeding the filter - It's the one that need to be blocked.
3- Pressure line - Once the internal line is blocked, 100% of the engine blood coming from the heart (oil pump)will be flowing through.
4- One-way valve - keep the backpressure from the oil cycler to go back to the engine, it redirect the flow toward the turbo instead.
5- Turbo feed line.
6- Oil cycler line - fill the cycler when engine is running - fill the turbo will fresh oil when engine is stopped - duration time 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
7- Turbo's return oil line to the pan.
8- Hydraulical external filter mount - Allow the use of much bigger, free-flowing 10 microns filters.
9- Filter mount pressure output - Either direct the flow back to the engine or in this case, toward the cooler.
10- Oil return line - Fresh, cooled oil is sent back into the engine, thus reducing crank, rods and other internals temperature.

Image

Here is an aftermarket cooler I installed in front of the lower section of the rad. Work very well and does not create any restriction at all.
As you can see I used high-pressure, industrial hoses with cheaps clamps and it's 100% safe. Just make sure they are well thightened and check them often.

For those who don't want to remove the pump cover to block the inner line, yes you can have a filter adaptor with fittings. This adaptor work well with turbo setup as it allow you to install equal lenght runner manifold with the turbo closer to the block. Also a must-have for those with A/C planning to make a turbo conversion.

Hope it help.

thanks jess, that's an awesome setup & write-up, definately looks like the way to go w/ your turbo setup, moving the filter out of the way, i think it looks like a bit of overkill for my naturally aspirated setup 'tho.
thanks for the pics, that answers a lot of questions.

btw, went 'n' got the oil changed myself .. i know, letting someone else touch my car, but i can't pull it off stealthy enough in my underground parking .. anyways, had to go to 3 differnent garages & lube shops, the last one i lucked out & found a overboosted turbo 'fly enthusiast who finally agreed to try the mustang filter .. went w/ one of their "high flow, valved" filters for a 5.0 mustang .. and just like everyones said, it works 'n' fits great =) not to mention adding an extra half litre =)
thanks for the tips whoever posted that originally !

i just told them i needed a filter for a 5L mustang & they responded with, the regular filter or the high performance one.
most of the fords use the same filter, i used to buy them in bulk from costco when i was into 4x4'ing

if you want to use a K&N Performance Gold oil filter (that's what I use), just ask the parts counter for K&N part number HP-3001.
You also get the benefit of not being associated with wanting Mustang parts

I have some pics of my oil cooler in http://photos.yahoo.com/bdgracia Go to engine stuff and look at the last 3 pics. This was a kit that Select Sales had, is basically a mocal oil cooler with braided lines and fittings.

You can make a similar setup with a Setrab oil cooler, earl -10AN braided lines and fittings.

I don't know if it will clear the A/C compressor or not, I don't have A/C so I can comment on it, but the HP-3001 filter is pretty damn big though. I just measured the box the filter comes in, it's 3 3/4" x 6".

The Fram 3600 for the 3.8 V6 Ford Mustang will clear A/C.
