this thread is for members to post first hand experience with different systems/solutions used for tuning a turbo setup ..
i'll try to move some of the old posts into this section, but please make sure you post only factual information, what you heard/read in the magazines doesn't count.
thanks :D

Finally......!

Well i have a microtech LT-8 installed on my car,
I am still tuning i had an initial run if 157whp and 140 ft.lbs torque .. but this was with a boost cut active.

I have a MegaSquirt system installed on 2 totally different cars, one turbocharged suzuki vitara and one Jeep with a N/A 400ci small block chevy.
To begin with the kits are cheap, parts cost for a board runs about $130 USD, $50 for a partial kit from the 'project daddies' and the rest for other parts from a different source. There are also some other options available, stimulator for bench testing the ECU, relay board for easier wiring and MegaView for a neat looking vacuum fluorescent or LCD display, more of a gadget than a tool really, but we all like gadgets don't we...
If you have experience soldering and such, you'll have no problems assembling the units, but there are people who sell preassembled units for the soldering impaired.
Tuning is done with a PC, using a serial port and various flavours of tuning software that run on all Windows versions and one program being developed for unix/macosx.
All the units come with a 250kpa MAP sensor (2.5 bar) that senses boost up to just over 20psi, a MAF is not used.
The user base is quite big, and the system has been installed on a wide variety of vehicles, and people are quite willing to give their help on the mailing lists.
Originally the system was designed as an easy way to convert a carburated car to fuel injection, hence it doesn't control spark timing but as the user base grew, quite a few code variations have been produced with lots of different features.
There's dual table code for running 2 sets of injectors mapped individually, that code also features rev limiters, launch control, PWM idle control, nitrous safety control (rpm window switch, temperature switch and throttle switch all in one), progressive shiftlight and experimental boost control.
MegaSpark uses standard megasquirt hardware to control spark with a distributor, but no fuel.
MegaSquirt'N'Spark controls fuel and spark with a distributor, plus it has 2 outputs that can be triggered by a selection of variables (rpm, coolant/intake temperature, throttle, MAP and some others). It also has a soft/hard rev limiter retarding spark and dropping fuel.
MegaSquirt'N'EDIS is derived from MegaSquirt'N'Spark, controls fuel and spark with a Ford EDIS wasted spark system.
Then there are some other variations floating around.
The fuel 3d map is 64 sites (8x8) with user configurable scale and linear interpolating between sites.
Fuelling is corrected by intake air temperature, plus warmup enrichments when the coolant is cold, all user configurable.
The default is to use GM temperature sensors but the software/hardware can be adapted to use other sensors.
Tuning is fairly easy and you can take datalogs with the laptop to diagnose.

I currently run my vitara with dual table code controlling fuel with 8 injectors, and rely on the stock ECU for spark. It works fine except the stock MAF is quite restrictive with 10psi boost and I plan to switch over to MegaSquirt'N'Spark soon and just run 4 large injectors so I can just completely remove the stock ECU. I've been running with this system since June last summer and I'm quite happy with it.
The Jeepster has a 400ci small block chevy motor from a 70's Chevy Nova, the motor is all stock except the high compression pistons (9.8:1), slight overbore and an Edelbrock Torker II intake manifold modified for fuel injection, using a gutted carb for a throttle body. Running MegaSquirt'N'Spark only controlling fuel so far, with a recurved HEI ignition for spark until we get another HEI to convert for using with squirtnspark. The motor pulls quite well with this setup, throttle response is good and economy looks promising.

All i need is an ECU with anti lag but i dont want to spend 3k on a motec. And yes i know it will distort the thrust housing on the turbo and yes i know it can cause the manifold to crack, but hell you only live once.

I thought this LT8 had anti lag, but i saw it doesn't or am i just confused

Does anyone recommend the Haltech ECus?

thanks for the reply btw.

No the microtech doesn't have anti lag..!

Haltech are good but you will be geting more and more expensive.... what about the AEM ....have you checked that out?

I am not in a rush so i will continue to look until i get a good price.
Thanks for the help GTiT, i appreciate it. :)

well i'm not sure if its because i'm using a stand alone but i do not have a fueling problem with my fuel rail like other turbo charged members ...

I've noticed that i'm still running very rich and i still have the stock big hollow looking manifold...

I'm running 4AGZE 365cc injectors....

I would like to hear from some of you guy what your ignition timing is ..

I'm considering a daual stage boost controller so that i can run 6psi on low boost and 15psi on high boost.

This will help me to have less wheelspin offf the line when i drag race.

Now i currently run a maximum timing of 34degrees at full boost (15psi)

How does that degree compare with you other guys out there?

I was also thinking of advancing timing on the low boost setting and then begin to retard at say 10psi boost ..... this way i will have good responce at low boost and i will still save the engine at high boost ..

The stock GTi runs a max timing of 32 degreees at full throttle and about 6500RPM and above.

I want to hear your feed back on this especially from you stand alone guys out there.

BTW - in case you don't know i'm running water injection also

There is also the tuning method of ramp down to boost, then ramp the timing back up after peak torque to keep power from falling off.

Couple ways to tune - more timing, less boost or less timing more boost.

Looks like fairly high timing values though. Have you verified those are actual crank degrees?

Woops i'm sorry i made a mistek i checked the timing values yesterday it not 34 degrees undser full boost its actuallly 24 degrees

Those timing figures are the values that i'm getting from the hand controller display for the Microtech ECU

I currently bought a turboXS dual stage boost controller, so i'll be adjusting the timing curves for a better and somewhat more aggressive curve on the dyno...as the water injection helps me to run high timings.

But whatthee i'm still interested in what would you consider to be a good timing curve on a gti motor.

Here is my ECU dat in excel form.

REmember only use this data as a tuning tool what works for me may not work for you.
Use these values only as reference as i am not responsible if your engine goes BOOM.

Alot of things will make a difference in each of our set up
Location
TEmperature
Fuel quality
Engine Condition
Oil Viscosity
Spark plugs

And the list goes on... so remember only as REFFERENCE

Well it doesn't have rally style anti lag but it does have launch control which kind of works like anti lag for drag racing, and it has nitrous control that can enable the nitrous within a pressure window (ie come on at 80kpa and go off at 200kpa for example)

Hi, I am using an Omex 700 ecu it has anti lag, launch controll and much more. It has almost to many functions.

I use Autronic and have set up many systems on different motors. We currently have 2 off road buggies running Cultus G13B's and a Nissan V6 turbo running one also. I have set them up on Mitsubishi V6 motors both turbo and N/A. There are many options such as auto tune, traction control, anti lag & direct fire CDI to name a few. Systems come with loom, and air temp sensor and quite easy to wire up.

you could have a real anti lag whit ms... ms could have up to 90deg of timing...you dont need this, so you could set your triger to have 50deg btdc and 40atdc ,tell ms your triger is at 90 deg, do the math , remove 40 deg to have the real timing and you use the 2 spark map/fuel map, whit a switch to activate anti-lag . the idle switch open a solenoid and triger ms
