I just picked up a 1986 Chevy Sprint Plus. 3 cylinders. First thing I always do when I buy an older model vehicle is change the fluids. While changing the oil I found that the oil filter had been cross threaded and over tightened. It took some major effort to get it off but now there is no way to put another filter on without destroying the threads on the new filter and further damaging the threads on the engine. I figured maybe I could get a metric die and chase the threads but it might remove too much material and the filter would fit loosely and eventually work its way loose. I really don't want to be driving to work and the oil filter come loose in the middle of traffic. The thread size of the filter mounting pipe I believe is M18x1.5. My question, is there a way to remove and replace the oil filter mounting pipe? If not is there some sort of adapter plate that uses the three threaded bolt holes on the filter mount that I can install so I can put a filter and not be worried? Thanks in advance

So you probably have found a solution by now but just incase your still wondering. Just to be sure I have to ask if you've seen with your eyes that the threads are jacked? I've put on a filter by hand and over torqued that sucker by the next oil change was so hard to get off I ended up nearly tearing it in two taking it off with a pair of channel locks it was stuck but threads were fine. Usually oil filters are made of a pretty soft steel where as the engines threads should be some type of hardened steel the filter can go on cross threaded and though the filter is toast the engines threads are just fine as long as you put the new filter on correctly. Now if the threads are screwed up try a thread chaser it's not a die it is not meant to cut threads but to help reform existing/remaining threads if they have been damaged. Less effective and a bit of a pita in my opinion you could clean up the worst spots using a thread file of the correct size and then put a new filter on. If neither of those methods work and you need to replace that tube well... That's scary but I will let you know what I find when I get my engine block out some time soon I'm sure it coould be done but I would cut new threads and helicoil my oil filter each oil change before I would go at replacing the tube.
