I'm looking to buy this car from a guy, but unsure if his asking price is fair.

I'm going to be taking it for a test drive this weekend... After talking to him back and forth I've found out that there are some issues. He says rockers are well rusted out, and the driver side door lock doesn't work. It has the 1.0L 3-cylinder.

Anything that I should look for/watch out for?

It's going to be bought primarily as a winter beater. I had a 92 Swift before and absolutely loved it.

Around Alberta thats a $200-500 car. It doesn't look bad at all, and I really liked those mk1's for a long time. The biggest issue with running a mk1 here is parts availability, it seemed like overnight, they all disappeared! I used to fix up a lot of them, but couldn't do them once the parts became so scarce. For example, they are bad for jumping out of first gear, and trans parts or a used trans is incredibly hard to find, so a bad tranny can sideline you. Most wear parts can be had from rockauto though, gaskets, brakes, suspension etc.
If it works well and drives well, you are probably fine to grab it as a cheap beater and just drive it. They are durable and reliable generally, so chances are you will get your money's worth out of it.

over 300,000 km, runs great, poor interior.
like cody says, the early years are getting a lot harder to find parts for, rockauto still has some.

He was asking $1000. At first he wouldn't go lower than $700. Told him I'm not going higher than $500. Couple days later he got back to me and said "come get it for $500".

I'm going to pass. With all the rust it's got, I'm not willing to repair it. I already have another beater anyways.

You could have bought it for parts. Here in Norway, I just paid $350 for new tires. So $500 for it was not much... but problem can sometimes be dry storage space!
