put together a nice cold air intake using some extra bits of junk I had lying around the shop.
materials used:
3 - 2.75" hose clamps (napa)
1 - 2.5" mandrel u-bend (summit racing)
1 - 2.5" coupler (ebay)
1 - 2.5" cone filter (ebay) (would have preferred a $20 foam unifilter from bent-bike)

the stock setup is very restrictive and looks like poo


easy enough to get rid of.

I wanted the space & lots of airflow, so I trimmed back the plate the resonation box was mounted to.


next up, chop the mandrel bend in half


here's the initial test fitting, I had to shorten the pipe a bit and I opened the top of the hole through the fender so I could angle the piping down through the hole a bit (see the red line).


and here's the end result with some industrial black rust-o-leum (courtesy of J,V,&S) and everything clamped in place.

the air-saw is your friend
lots of intake noise now under full-throttle/load, but no change at idle, not the same burble at idle you get from the gti dohc 16v with a similar setup.
you could replace the stock rubber hose, but why bother ?

I did make sure to use a bit of K&N filter oil on the ebay cotton filter, unlike the gt/gti, there's no hotwire maf to contaminate. I would recommend going to your local motorcycle shop and buying a 2.5" foam uni-filter instead of the cheap cotton gauze style, they work much better and it'll cost you about the same. You could also weld the two bends back together once you find the right angle instead of using a coupler.

a few noob questions:
Is the stock setup on a base fly/metro/swift 1L 3C (95+) using an air intake from the fender with a filter? If so, whats a good replacement for it?
Why do they/you put the air filter down inside the fender as opposed to under the hood?

To make it look like you didn't just put a hacked piece of mandrel bend in there and call it a day . Looks good though...hows the seat dyno?

Shouldnt you have left the piece of steel the air box mounted to to help deflect crap flying off your tire away from the filter? what happens when it rains? are you going to pull over and wait for the roads to dry up?

Also wouldnt that piece have caused an even higher pressure area with all the air rushing through the bumper and hitting the 'wall' it would have created?

- having the filter in the engine bay makes it a warm or hot air intake, not good for performance or preventing pinging.
- the sheet metal I cut out is what the stock resonation box mounts to, the problem with it is that it's too close to the fender liner (which I retained) to fit a filter in there.
- no, there is not a problem with sucking up water on rainy days, the intake would literally have to be submerged in water to hydrolock the engine and a few rain droplets getting through are only going to cool the charge further.
- seat of the pants dyno, I seem to be getting an extra 5mph out of one of the uphill onramps I use and the intake sound under WOT is just like my old swift gt (with a similar hot intake). you're never going to make these cars very 'fast', but you can certainly make them 'fun' ! this bumped the driving over a notch from econo-car towards go-cart.

I wasnt worried about it sucking up water but a little moisture with road dust dirt and grime and youve got a really dirty filter.

no but seriously any ideas? should i just use the stock airbox and remove the filer, pipe a cai and put a filter on the tip of the pipe?

hum........ this writeup is for a mk4/5?

His engine is a 1.3 16 valves (for the 1998 +), but the setup is pretty much the same if you have a 1.0L or a 1.3 8 valves... on a 1.0L just follow the path of the air intake, you'll see it goes under the fender, just remove the big black box (it's a "silencer", lower the quantity of air that goes inside the intake) and you will improve the air flow by a lot. You could just do the same as Nitro and change your system to have a cone filter at the end, all mks have pretty much the same system (just the turbo that is different, not sure for the GTI)

actually the write is just for the mk5's 16v setup ... most of the g10's and g13 2-valve/cyl engines used a tbi intake and would be a much bigger hassle to mod.
if you want to do a cold air intake on one of them, look at using the pressure hat for the turbo conversions and running your tubing from there.

*edit* nevermind, Searched it.

I have found out that if you use a larger intake pipe than 1 3/4" you will lose power. I had a CAI similar to N1tros on my old MKV, except I cut some stuff an used a piece of silicone hose to get between the filter an engine.

What do you do with the MAF sensor? On my 89 sprint turbo it is mounted basically on top of the airfilter box. I cant figure out how I am going to put a CAI in it. Is it even worth it?

essentially if you turn the maf around & draw air from the back of the engine near the firewall, it's a pretty good source for cooler air.
look at some of the pictures posted by t3 ragtop, he's pretty much got it figured out.

wat about backpressure on your motor??? would it fuck up your valves?

no, theres no worries with doin these. ive had mine on for almost 2 years and no a single problem.
