I've had great luck with 'Arm & Hammer' powdered laundry detergent, and noticed that there is a thread in this section about Tide laundry detergent as an engine degreaser, followed by some great suggestions.
As far as the traditional spray on diesel/degreasers, Here's a picture of my favorite:

The QC Automotive Brand is the kind which foams up and stays where you spray it.
Two I've tried:
Gunk 'Engine Brite' and
CRC Brand Engine Degreaser
don't foam so you might as well take a pail of diesel and a paint brush or an air gun...it's the same result.
The QC isn't that expensive, either.
There's probably others which foam up nicely, but I'm not sure of their names.
It's a little thing, but once in a while, when I want to degrease an engine compartment from a car I've just bought, it's nice to have the foam at hand.
