i did it at work...decided what the hell why not...my car isnt anything spectacular, just a 1.0 liter...

but i took a screwdriver and chipped away at it...

took me forever...

i ended up taking off the dash just to see how far that black insulation went...left the dash off cause i dont need it...i dont care about the asthedics...plus now theres a place to set my drink...lol

what really worked for me with all the welding i had
to do was cold weather "24~28*f" and the ol" air chisel
the tar flew off in chunks!! drivers side floor in about 45 sec

I gave it a try tonight just to see how easy it whould come off. it was pretty cold outside so I just grabbed a large flat head screwdriver and hammer, managed to get the panel off the spare tire well in about 30-40 mins.

I just removed all my sound deadening tar stuff from my 1995 Swift. This was BY FAR the easiest removal ever. I simply used a flat blade driver, and it came off in giant sheets. I didn't even (have to) scratch the primer.

Then I simply used some 3M Bug Tar and Wax remover to clean off the residue. Took me like 35 minutes for the entire car. (incuding cleaning) I was completely amazed, as this is usually a day+ job ( with very sore palms the next day from chizeling away all day )

Now for the more difficult task of removing the dash to get the firewall insulation out.. wHee!

When its below freezing it is the best time to do it, the stuff just shatters and voila its all done. Some pieces come off nearly whole. I took all the tarpaper out of my car today in 20min. It was about 1*C out so I pulled my seats and got to work. All you need to do it hit the tar paper with a soft rubber mallet and it all shatters in big chucks. You don't have to pound just some good taps will work. Sweep up the mess and you are all done. About 14lbs gone and the car can now be seam welded.

i know this is an old topic. i live in florida and every day it is like a steam room. the second i open the door heat is in my face. that only happens when i roll all the windows up. and would that be enogh heat? i don't have a torch.

Go outside and sit in your car for 15 seconds...then take a torch and hold it to your hand (don't use the one you write with) for 15 seconds. If there is no perceptable difference in temperature the heat of the Florida weather will be hot enough .

great... I finally read about removing the tar. And I missed all the freezing temps by like a month or so.... Oh well. I'll just have to borrow an fair chisel from a friend.

mine came off no problem. i did it yesterday night. only used a flat head screw driver and hammer and it came off nice.
i hate that stuff just holds water and helps rot your floors out.

A+++ on the air chisel... minus gutting the interior, it took literally no time at all.

the flames work well for seam seal and crap like that, but for this sound deadening, air hammer is the only tool for the job.

speaking of seam seal, I personally dont use a torch for that either... I put on some old nasty cloths and some safety glasses and go at it with a big knotted wire wheel on my grinder

If you guys need to get the tar shit cold in a jiffy, just use a can of compressed air from a computer/electronics store, upside down and it cools to -54c or -65f

I had this white nasty shit that someone dripped inside under some of the tar... I had to take it out with the cold.
