Hi guys,
I'm new to the board and to these engines. I have just bought a G10 engine for an OT project. How do I verify the engine year. The engine is a TBI model, the only #s I could find on the block were the G10 and 993 cm3. The head had a 3AO8B147 # engraved on it. I need to get the wiring and connectors from a doner car along with the ECU. I need to establish the year of the engine so I get the correct wiring. The PO told me it was an '86, I just want to verify.
Before you rip me apart, I have been searching on here, but the only threads that look like they could be useful have dead links. If I have missed the obvious thread, could someone please tell me what it is.
My plan is for Tech3 head, cam and sprocket, and an under drive pulley and a header. All of that I have found from here, a great site. A couple of weeks ago I knew nothing about these engines. Due to the wide breadth of knowledge that is freely given on here, I now have my plan! Thank you.

If you put a couple pictures up we will be able to identify the year pretty accurately. I know these cars pretty well but have zero knowledge of how to Id Engs via casting numbers, it's just not normally needed. If its an '86, it will have a carb, if it's 89+ it will have a throttle body with a single injector spraying down the middle of it. 86 will also have a black tin valve cover, 89+ will have a relatively narrow silver aluminum valve cover.

on the block near the tranny mount area on what would be the reight side when facing the pulleys there is a serial number. It will start with G10****** the letter after G10 is the year it will match the year code in the vin. Find and post that number. But you will not find a "I" "O" or "Q" in a vin.

Wow, thanks for the speedy replies!
I will take some pictures today. The engine has a Throttle Body. It has a narrow aluminum valve cover with ribs/fins.
I did look for a serial #, but obviously didn't look hard enough!

As "Mother" is curled up on the couch ill, I made her comfortable, and snook out to look for a serial #. there it is right where you guys said it would be! It must be my old age, or something!
There wasn't any letter next to the G10 up high on the block. The # below the 993 cm3 was
G10-386964. So does this help?

My best guestimate is that it is a MK3 '92-'94. Does anyone disagree with that?

from your description it definitely sounds like an mk3 motor.

I'M surprised Phil & Ed didn't pipe up. They would be able to tell you the year, month, date and time it was produced along with every guy (or Gals) names who were involved in its manufacture. ( and probably be able to tell you the nose length, eye color, hair color and length, marital status, IQ Plus they're mothers maiden name of each person involved in the process. ) ) best wishes each, Jonathan.

After the G10, there's a LETTER which corresponds to the exact year.

Now, Jonathan...since you didn't help the thread with any new information, nor did you post a link to the same information which is also included in a Teamswift thread, your homework will be to look up the year that this information was extended another 30 years...(hint: it was less than 5 years ago)

If you would take the amount of time you've spent ruminating over posts which have been adequately addressed and put that towards studying the 'copy and paste' technique, you'd be half way to your New Year's Resolution by now.

I simply pointed out another place where the information could be found.
My experience is very limited, and most of the time, you'll see me responding to questions regarding the
'84-'94 year models.
The Wife and I have a dozen of those cars and include the Turbo, NA, TBI, GT, and GA versions.
Our experience is 'hands on', as you probably can see if you revisit some of my old posts, which include pictures of our modest work.

You youngsters with your OBD II cars have a much easier time of it.


Now go do your homework...remember, it is a date which is less than 5 years ago.
