Piston Wrist-Pin removal,
I’m just wondering what others might use to press the wrist pins out/in on the piston connecting rods on the 1.0L.
During a recent top end upgrade on my daily driver (head replacement due to a cracked head) I decided to go ahead and put in new pistons, which I should have done back when I did a total rebuild. Oh well, we all learn from mistakes. After close examination and advice of the FSM, I found out real fast that removing and reinstalling wrist pins is no cake walk. Luckily I do own a 20ton press, but then there was the issue of holding the piston steady in order to remove and reinstall. The FSM shows a picture of a fancy tool that probably not a one of us would own, or know where to obtain
After some trial and error, I finally sat back and fabbed up the following. It would be better done with ¼” tube steel, but what I used was all I had. What I used was 2” tube steel, ¼” angle on which the piston flats rest on, and a piece of ¾” pipe. The pipe acts as both a catch basin for the pin, but mostly as a support for the thin tube steel I had.
