So I have noticed that with every engine I put this same aluminium under drive pulley on it rubs and makes a sound against the timing belt. It drives me nuts! It sounds like a bad bearing. The sound goes away immediately when I put some oil on my finger and dab it on the outter edge of the timing belt, which lubricates where they are rubbing. Does anyone have this issue? Maybe I have to try and new one.

Mine rubs against the plastic timing cover due to the smaller OD

if you want that fresh engine to last, put a stock pulley back on.

The mk2&3 gti engine has a harmonic balancer built into the crank pulley, thats part of the reason they are so heavy.
From memory the mk1 gti doesn't have a harmonic balancer and there have been no problems with those.

I've had an underdrive pulley on my GT engine for 10 years. That engine is now in my turboed GTi. The engine has been abused almost daily. It has seen 8600rpm daily multiple times in it's all motor days. The engine is still going strong. That's the one I ran the 1/4 mile last weekend with.
The one in the '91 GTi that is build with JE pistons also has an underdrive pulley on it. Also seen 8600rpm daily for almost 3 years. Still runs strong.

First off, I prefer OEM steel pulleys for durability (and low noise).

Putting oil on your belt is a temporary fix and may actually make it worse by contaminating the aluminum pulley surface.

You may want to try cleaning the belt with brake cleaner, and then put a bit of silicone high temperature brake grease on, so that the side of the belt will have the right type of lubricant often used to silence belt/pulley noises.

Nope. No sound.

You have to remember something, the back side of the pulley is there to keep the belt from walking right off the cam sprockets.. The belt is supposed to rub against it. Perhaps you have too much tension on your timing belt.

Not much you can do other than look for a washer similar to the one between the crank sprocket and oil pump that keeps the belt away from the oil pump.
