I had this problem since I got my metro. I was bored the other day when I was cleaning my car. And in the process I decided to try come mag/alum polish on the antenna just for the fun of it. I did not notice anything right off the bat because I did not drive the car for 2 days. But now I get EVERY radio channel in the area. I hope this helps some of you who are frustrated with your radio reception.

* the only downfall to this is I now have 20+ country music stations to go thru when channel surfing*

This is my hooptie, there are many like it but this one is mine. With out my hooptie I am walking and without me my hooptie is broken down.

You probably removed oxidation/corrosion/dirt buildup between the shaft section of the antenna. I'm surprised it made that big of difference though..

It also made the antenna "bling" now. But yes it made a VERY nice difference in the radio reception.

I have the same problem with my 2000 Metro, my sterio will not pic up nothing but 2 channels here (forcing me to deal with CDs and go with Satelite radio) What is weird as that I could pull another car up right beside it and get better reception than my Metro. Anyone know of anything else I could try besides the cleaning job? (and yes, the antenna is pluged in)

PARTY AT MY HOUSE!!

Unplug the antenna connector from the back of your deck and do a continuity check between the center pin on the antenna plug and the antenna shaft. This should confirm if the antenna has a good connection to it's wire.

At least you have options - here we have one FM station and one AM station, both of which are government owned and not worth listening to.

What wouldn't I give to have XM coverage down here.

Well.. here in Canada we dont have any satellite radio either.. Something about Canadian Content Regulations (a certain % of all radio in Canada has to be 'canadian', and I guess satellite isnt up to par), so the only way to get XM or Sirius up here is to give an american address when you sign up.

Typically you can get satellite coverage right across CONUS, and into Canada, but once you get beyond a few hundred miles off the North American continent, you're outside the footprint of the satellite - I have no problem giving a US address, it's still not going to work for me.

Hello everyone

i am using Alpine Stereo unit Model CDE-110 Pre which used to come in new Honda City, it has MP3/WMA/Audio CD/Usb/FM player. as its from Honda and in honda the radio antenna is bit different from the one come in Suzuki or Toyota(not the round one but the grip/jack type), so I explored the markets and able to find a jack for this pre, it was original of Honda City, i patched up with a female radio jack, which one usually found behind a stereo unit(image attached)


now the problem is, its still not working with my car radio antenna, i mean it does not stop/tune when i use the option of auto turning,, and even on manual frequency input the sound is very noisy and 'shaa shaa' all the time.

Before that i had an old stereo unit(japanese radio) in which i installed a USB MP3/SD Card module altered in MD unit and i even get a lot clear FM signals on that unit.

Kindly suggest me a permanent solution of this.

From what I can tell,your antenna is not working at all. I would look at that connection first. Hook up a regular antenna (not mounted to the car but is located outside the car) and see what you get. Let us know what you find out.

Just got my '94 Swift today and I noticed that my radio is getting a lot of static. I have the standard Clarion 39101-70E40 in there, but I'm not sure what I should do first to go about fixing this problem.

I have exactely the same problem right now!!

This is an old post but an easy one to find so I feel some general test that can be done with a wire brush and a multi meter should be put here.

As many have said first thing to check is your connections into the back of your deck or if running an aftermarket antenna anywhere a connector is between the antenna tip and the stereo unit. If there's any corrosion or loose connections clean them or bend some tabs for a tighter fit don't be afraid to use dielectric greese or silicone greese or similar products at connections they prevent future corosion and help provide a sanitary connection.

If all the connections have been checked and check out but you still have problems with your reception you can do three resistance checks on the antenna itself. Set your multi meter to check resistance "ohms" horse shoe looking symbol or the one that beeps when you touch your leads together. It helps if you have gator clips or test leads you can clamp onto the antenna.

The three places to test are as follows:

•One lead to the antenna outside of the car the other lead the other to the tip of the connector that goes into the back of the stereo unit. The actual tip of that connector the skinny part you should read no more than 5 ohms.

•One lead to the base of the antenna outside of the car the other to the base of the connector that goes into your stereo unit. Not the tip but the fat part that usually has the tabs that keep it from falling out of the stereo. You should read no more than 5 ohms.

•One lead to the tip of the connector that goes into your stereo and the other to the base of that connector. You should read OL, INF, 100megaohms, No beep.

If any of those test yield different results you likely have a broken or shorted antenna cord.

This doesn't take anything fancy but know how precise your multi meter is if you get one from harbor freight you very well could get a result barely out of limits maybe 5.5-6 ohms that's fine as the meter has a grossly large tolerance of accuracy. Hope this solves all your antenna issues.
