Been getting by w/FM radio only from my '98 Chevy Metro OEM stereo CD player for 2 years. Couldn't fix CD, wasn't economically practical to have it fixed, wanted an original unit & didn't find a replacement. Was tough after 103.7 abandoned Rock'n'Roll & went CW. The 92.5/95.5 is powerful, but sucks & the 104.5 is fine, but weak.
Found a cheap 'As Is' unit from LKQ, for parts only & told it was either a returned or not tested item. Took a gamble that at least the CD drive might be OK. Hooked it up & confirmed it lit up, but basically only hissed, except very faint reception of an FM station, but nothing from CD. Opened it up & looked it over carefully under magnification, but couldn't find any broken wires or fractured solder.
It's surprising how big the box is & how little is inside on these Delco units. Guess they made the space for the FM/Cassette/CD stereos. Missed a couple of those on fleabay.
Rolled the dice by R&R the CD drives, transplanting the 'new' CD drive into my 'old' FM only working unit. Popped the Beatles 'White Album' in & the cherries lined up! The CD player sounds so much better than FM, got back choice & blessed relief from commercials!
