The Swift didn't come with carpet and I couldn't find any worthwhile carpet to salvage in the junkyards. I really didn't want to blow $150-$250 of my budget for a molded carpet so I cheaped out and came up with this. I was inspired by an RS Sliverknit carpet kit I got for my old 911 RS replica, but got the cheapie stuff.

It looked like this before:





I scrubbed all of that nastiness out of there and now it looks a ton better. I can't wait for the fumes to clear so I can drive it and not be under the influence from snorting all the glue. This is what two yards of $5.99/yd heavy duty flannel looks like:

I'm guessing you glued it into the car?

Gonna be a bitch if you ever have to pull it out...

I got 18MPG in a 3cyl with a 5 speed manual 4dr, '93 Metro!

Yeah I used regular auto parts store upholstery/headliner spray from a can, which actually cost $7.99, nearly doubling the price of the project!

You have to work it, but it'll come up again...

No jute padding or nothing? I would've put some sound killer underneath.. but it looks good.

Personally, I think it's worth the extra $$ to get the real molded stuff. StockInteriors.com offers full carpeting for $114, not a bad deal. They will even send you small sample swatches so you know exactly which color to order.

We used this stuff under the hood like he's showing in the video:

The final visible surface is aluminum, not black; their picture isn't so good.
It's cheaper than Dynamat and just as good.
It also goes under the carpet, down on the floor first.

Next we put some of this over the first layer:

Finally, we put the carpet over the two layers.
You do the door inside panels with the first stuff, and in our case, you can't hear the engine until you get over 85 mph (3.79 final drive).

Makes for a relaxing drive on those 10-12 hour trips.

Since you didn't have a carpet to begin with, I'll bet you really noticed an improvement; good job!
We bought some stock black carpet from a 'Big Lots' to make some throw rugs...similar to your idea.

Once you get the cars dialed-in (compression, leaks, bearings, alignment, brakes) swap in new rubber and glass, you've got something which should last for years!

But this is the track/autocross car. I need to be able to hear my RPM at all speeds, and I wasn't willing to spend the money on something that wouldn't make it faster, or add the weight.

On a street car, I am completely with you. For the autocross/track/GRM $2010 Challenge car, real carpet was too expensive in every category.

It's a race car. Why do you have any carpet in it? Not trying to be a jerk, just wondering because I've never seen race cars with carpeting.

Fair question. It's more of a track car, less of a race car. I was willing to take the 1.6lb hit on the material The GRM $2010 Challenge has a concours element to it, and I do street drive it, so I didn't want the bare painted metal look. I was willing to go so far to eliminate that... so far just happened to be $20.

You can buy cheap carpets from http://www.autozone.com/floor-liners-fl ... /floor-mat

Floor liners like weathertech or husky liners are easier to install and clean
