For my '92 Metro 'vert 1.0 Auto, I'd like to add a K&N air filter. On ebay, most of the ads 'claim' 1-5 HP increase. Is this hype, or does anyone have any real world numbers to prove it. I'd pay $50 for an easy Horse and perhaps one more mpg. It has an Xfi re-grind cam waiting for surgery.
I mostly want to keep it close to stock, yet increase Volumetric Efficiency/HP.
Do they work as advertised?
I don't want to put on a cone set up, as I plan on keeping it factory looking. Although a 2" manifold back exhaust will be next.

Total waste of money. Spend $50 on a tuneup or something. It won't get you any hp gains whatsoever. Its a downgrade. Nothing more than modern snake oil. Or maybe a nice new lightweight battery relocated to clean up the engine bay and make working under the hood easier.

It depends. Some oem air filters are more restrictive than others. I'm not sure if the stock Metro one is or not. It might give a half an hp. But even if it was 2 or 3hp, you wouldn't feel it. And it wont make any difference mpg wise. My Cadillac's stock air filter is said to be just as good as the K&N filter. I put a K&N filter on it anyways because they're cleanable. I like to clean and re-oil mine every oil change. Now if you were to put a carb hat, aluminum tubing, and a K&N filter you might see a gain but it would still be a small gain.

K&N filters are not real filters. they will keep the gravel out, that's about it..

Yup. Take a look at the compressor blades on turbo that's run one of them for a while. The leading edges are all chewed up.
