Suppose you are thinking of changing your shock absorbers...
Here's a little DIY which might nudge you in that direction.

Here we have a Swift.
Nice car. Usually when you buy a used car, the shocks are shot.
How tough is it to change them?
Before you lift the car, loosen the 4 wheel lugs, the three nuts at the top (two if it's an MK1) and the center bolt. Here you can see one type of bolt which has an allen wrench in the center of the shock.
Next

You can see the 4 bolts on the top which you can loosen before you lift it up. 3 are marked with blue arrows. The fourth is in the center of the offset box wrench. Use the allen to hold the shaft steady and loosen the nut marked with the red arrow until the nut is only held on by a couple of threads. If there's no allen, you can hold the shaft in place with a pair of Vise-Grips.


when you lift it up, pull the tire off and set up a couple of jackstands.


Now, you've got the top loose, and you need to release the brake line from the strut/shock.
Use a screwdriver, and tap it out in the direction of the red arrow.

Ok, now we can remove the two bolts holding the strut to the hub assembly/knuckle.
Here, we have an end wrench on one side, and a breaker bar with a socket on the other:

If you've done your homework, it should look like this:

Now, you tap the two bolts out in the direction of the arrow.
Then you can lift the shock up a little bit, and loosen the three nuts on top the rest of the way by hand.

Figure a good hour for the job, and you should end up with this:


So, if you've been thinking about changing your shocks, that's about all there is to pulling them.

Once you get the cars dialed-in (compression, leaks, bearings, alignment, brakes) swap in new rubber and glass, you've got something which should last for years!

Albeit a pain to line everything up upon reassembly, if you take the center nut off the top of the strut, then lift the car off the ground, you can get the springs loose that way without a spring compressor. The spring completely unloads and goes loose, pulling right out, with no tension on it.

If you do it this way, you run the risk of not having the thrust bearing at the top of the strut line up properly on reassembly - and trust me on this, they're very easy to break.

Yes they are easily broken. Plastic bearing cages,,,, shakes fist at manufacturers.

Monroe makes replacement thrust bearings in metal, to replace the ones that have turned to dust.and new mounts.
also dont forget to get new bump stops and dust shields as your old ones usually do not fit the new shocks.
Also note get an alignment after the job it will be slightly out.
Did all 4 struts on my GTi this summer also changed and rebuilt all the spindles and hubs.
She now handles great like a brand new car.
no more knocking noise on slight turns, more power to the wheels.

That's interesting - the bearing is actually made up of the plastic race, a plastic inner spacer, two steel washers and two rubber seals - does Munroe offer just the metal race along with the strut mount, as shown in that picture or do you get a complete bearing assembly?

My mounts were made up of 2 hardened steel washers and a bearing in between with a greased rubber ring seal.
these sit inside of a cup shaped heavy washer and the lower plate washer mounted on the strut rod which then goes throught the hole in the mount.
The strut rod sheild goes on the rod first then the bottom plate, then the thrust washer with bearing and seal in between.
Then the cup washer then the mount and finally the rod nut.
the only thing that was plastic I saw on mine were the bearing races and the inner washer sitting inside the bearing race.
the monroe kit has the mount with 3 new nuts and the bearing.
you reuse the rest of the parts form the old setup.
the monroe bearings are metal.
I had to clean the cup shaped washer of some rust and corrosion, and repainted them with black engine enamel.
I wish I had take pictures of them as I did them.

My bad - it's as you describe - I was thinking there were two rubber seals an inner and outer, when in fact there is only the outer one.

Where I foresee a problem is that not only have I broken the plastic bearing a few times, I've even broken one of those hardened steel washers (the lower one with the larger hole) and that sort of destroys the seal ring.

Used from spare parts someone has?
or new from dealer for that washer you say you need.
someone out there must have some spares, don't know how you can break one tho.
Am sure any metro swift or firefly one will be the same.

Actually I have spares - both the bearing & the washer - both SGP, but if the metal Munroe bearing was available separately I would have asked the local Munroe dealer to get me a pair.

I can't find any other products where they sell them as a seperate part.

I wish I knew what the stock profiles were for my engines so I could judge the difference. Are your grinds progressive for the 16V?
