Recently I wear my tires on 16" wheels. Size 215/40 is freakin' wide, too wide. The car noticeable slows down. I don't recommend anyone such tires, rear wheels rub sometimes, front wheels fit perfectly (stock suspension). My wheels (RONAL 28 ) are very heavy. With all this disadvantages I must say one thing: Suzi is looking awesome
You can see it here: www.kret.za.net

Edited by: Zyklon at: 5/5/03 12:40:07 am

i just put on a pair of kumho supra ecsta 712's on the front before i bombed out to calgary & back the other weekend .. hit all sorts of weather from dry mountain highway to sleet/hail/wetsnow .. they really stick ! =) really cheap to. i paid $92cdn each for 185/55/r14 .. according to my gps the speedo is only out (reads high) by about 3km/hr @ 140km/hr.
the whole trip was about 2400km's in one long weekend. & i've noticed a lot less tire spin compared to my semi-budget 185/60/r14's i was running before.

hi guys, my setup is toyo T1-S 195/50/15 for front n toyo R1-R 195/55/15 for the rear. super grippy cornering n very stable n not forgetting very comfortable too.especially going over bumpy roads no feeling at all.
toyo T1-s very good tyres for wet n dry. toyo R1-R much much grippier as it's a semislick tyre. stick to the ground like glue. only downside using such sizes of tyre is that gti looks like a jeep.hahaha

MY CAR IS LOWERED ON EIBACH SPRINGS WITH KONI STRUTS . IT USED TO RUB SLIGHTLY WHEN I HAD ON 185/60/14 TYRES. I HAVE SINCE PUT ON 195/50/15 TYRES BUT I HAVE NOW ROLLED THE FENDER INNER LIPS. NOW THE RUBBIN IS GONE. THE 15 INCH RIM AND TYRE COMBO SLOWS THE CAR DOWN THOUGH SO IM GOING BACK TO 14" OR 13" FOR COMPETITION. I FIND THE KUMHO TYRE TO BE TOO HARD IN COMPOUND AND SOFT FOR POTHOLES. I AM GOING TO BE TRYING DUNLOPS OR SUMITOMOS IN 195/50/15 FOR STREET DUTY

I just put 16x7" TSW Ribs rims on my '93 Geo Metro, with 215/40/16 Nitto tires, the offset is 40mm. I wanted to get it lowered hella, so the wheels would be tucked under the fender, but it appears that they will hit. The rim and tires extend out all the way to the fender. I've seen other Swifts with the same size tire that are tucked under. How do I do it?

I noticed a bit of rubbing when I crank the steering wheel all the way to one side. I'd recommend staying in the +40 thru +45 mm offset when running with 16x7 or 17x7 wheels. I've since put them on my swift GT, but now I'm going to go back to the stock 14 steelies. Next time I buy rims, I'll rememeber to buy LIGHT ones

i am curious... do swift's tires (with rims) is make big difference? handle and acceleration?

if so then

what if i want best handle then what size of tire is it?

what if i want best acceleration (speed) then what size of tire is it?

i am only interesting in performance than look ( in my opinion 8))

The size and weight of your wheels are the biggest factors determining wheel performance (other than tire traction). Heavy wheels add more rotating weight, taking the car longer to accellerate and brake. Larger sized wheels also raise the gearing of the transmission, again slowing accelleration.

so recommend tires are 14"?

my car's original tire size is 145/80R12

one question more, do brands make difference?

i personally like yokohama (tire) and rage or maybe other brand(rim)

http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

really simple, and when your done, you can check for tires as well. dunno if yous guys have ever used this site, but its pretty common where im from.

Looking around at http://www.1010tires.com, I've noticed a set of 15" steel rims that have the right bolt pattern, but an odd offset of +32mm. That'll surely help the rubbing issues someone might have with wider 15" tires, but I'm worried that they'd push the tires a bit too far outside the wheel arches. I can get 45mm offset 15" steelies from Walmart as well... but I'd be worried about rubbing on turns, for sure.

Any thoughts on the arch clearance issue with the 32mm offset wheels?

Sat down with the calculator and a pad of paper and came up with these numbers:

Current 14" steelies (which rub ever so little when the wheels are cranked... keep in mind this is on a 1.0L car without having the hubs swapped to the 'vert or GTi bits):

- +45mm (~1 3/4") offset
- 5.5" wide
Therefore:
- ~1" on the outside of the rim
- ~4 1/2" on the inside of the rim

1010tire.com 15" steelies (the rims in question):

- +32mm (~1 1/4") offset
- 6" wide
Therefore:
- ~1 3/4" on the outside of the rim
- ~4 1/4" on the inside of the rim

Sooooo:

The difference on the inside of the rim is ~-1/4", which would definitely solve the rubbing issues when moving to the 15" +32mm steelies, assuming that the tire cross-section width remains the same.

The edge of the 15" rim will move ~+3/4" further out from the current 14" steelie's position. This may/may not be a problem. I'd have to go out there with a measuring tape to see if that'll clear, but it seems to me that there's 3/4" to spare.

Can anyone see a problem with my maths? If not, I might've just answered my own question. :)

anyone tried both 195-45-15's and 195-50-15's? i'm wondering if the 45 profile helps acceleration siginicantly or not

Just for future reference when people visit this site in 10 years  , IMO 205/50R14's are a godly size to use while racing.

Using 1010tires I had some fun with the numbers, using my stock (155-80-r13) tires as a reference, I think I will switch to 195-70-r14. If the web stie works well, the tires fit 5.5 to 7'' wheels (stock tires fit 4.5 to 5.5''), I my car should read 0.083% too fast (wich means that I don't really have to care about that) and it shouldn't affect mpg a lot since the tire would be the same size as the stock one... am I right or should I go back to school?

edit: also, I had found tires before that were 15'' and would make the car read 60.2 mph while stock would read 60... but I can't remember what were the exact specs for the tires...

That's always handy. Or you can go down a size, to a 65 or 60 profile tire to gain a bit of extra torque and better handling. Plus you'll never be pulled over by the cops if you keep to the speed limit that your speedo reads since you'll actually be going 1 or 2% under the speed limit. :D

yeah, but I just don't want to f*ck with the odometer ;)

but logically speaking, if I switch to 14'' rims that weight less than the stock rims, that I have smaller tires (since they're the same overall size, but the rim in the middle is taller, wich means there's less tire and more rim, if you understand what I mean...) wouldn't that mean that overall it would weight less, giving a bit more power to my car?

As long as the whole tire+rim combo weighs less than the stock combo. Plus the more weight to the outside of the diameter or the rotating assembly affects the energy required to move the tire more than in the inside. So a tire that weighs more and a rim that weighs less, even if the combination is lighter, might end up being less beneficial.

Likely the 14" tire with the shorter sidewall (than stock) will be a better choice and will weigh less anyway. Unless you get something that's bulletproof and has a million plys of steel. ;)

Something is WAY off here, 185/60-14 is the same diameter as your stock tires, 195/70-14 would be much larger.
