Well i just figured something out it took me some time but here it is.My 195 60 15 i put on my 91 vert they rubbed really bad (yes they looked cool as hell) I knew once my wife and i were in the car it was going to be by by side walls.I just took the rims off of the vert and put them on my wifes 06 KIA Spectra they fit with room to spare i then took the Kia rims and put them on the vert. I was surprised to see they did not rub they are the same size tire so what the hell???.Here is are difference's the standard Kia rims are 15 inch. The Aluminums i took off of the vert are 15.7 this small difference made all the difference in the world they do not rub at all.You can run 15 inch tires but be cautious on the rim size.
I hope this helps

Sorry to say but I dont think that really helps, perhaps need to clarify some of your comments and numbers to make things a little clearer.

There is no need to focus on the diameter of the rim (15" according to what you wrote) but rather

1. The total diameter of the tyre mounted on the wheel - with a 195/60/15 this is probably around 24.2" in diameter (note not all tyres are identical in measurements despite using the same basic sizings).

2. The width of the tyre (in this case a 195)

3. The width and offset of the rim (or backspacing).

These three factors will determine where the wheel and tyre sit relative to the wheel well and the wall of the well. There are plenty of people who have run wide rims by playing with the tyre width, total diameter and offset.

I am not that familiar with the vert so will refer to the GT/GTi

for example a 13x7inch rim with +40 offset will probably comfortably work on a GTi with a 205/60/13 tyre while same tyre, rim width but offset of +10 will stick out further (by 30mm) and foul on the fender wall. This tyre package has around total diameter of 22.4", very similar to a 195/50/15 tyre and not that much larger than the standard 175/60/14 (at 22.3")- ie. minimal effect on speedo and wont affect other things like ride height etc.

As you can see from this your tyre has a much larger diameter (which will also affect the speedo reading by almost 9% assuming your standard tyre is a 175/60/14).

To better see the impact of the tyre sizing and rim offset I suggest you have a play around with the following calculators

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

http://www.autolounge.net/calculators/tirespacing.html

hope that's useful and makes sense.

I’m not sure what is not clear. I had 195/60/15 with aftermarket rims the tires rubbed both inside and outside. I replaced them with my wife’s Kia tires 195/60/15 with stock steel rims and now i have NO rubbing inside or outside. I put the 2 tires side by side and the aftermarket rims are in fact wider than the steel stock rims off of the Kia. So because the aftermarket rims are wider they made the tires slightly wider but enough to rub inside and outside of my wheel wells.

Just a fast question. I finally did the 15 inch rim upgrade. The rims I bought are 15 x 6 with a +40mm offset. The car is lowered 1.6 inches on Intrax Coils. Everything has been gutted from the car so now it only weighs 1600 pounds instead of 1780 pounds. Brand new Struts at all the corners also. So this is my question. Which tire size could I use to not rub, going to start autocross racing this car next year. The current tires on the rims are a 205/65 r15 and they rub worse than old man balls on old man thighs. :D

Im stuck between these sizes

195/45 r15
195/50 r15
205/50 r15

195/50/15 will be fine on those rims.

Ok ty very much. I assume the 205/50 would rub since they are a bit taller and a bit wider.

that is what I ran on my car. it was lowered 1.6 inches and I didn't rub. not even over big bumps. but my car was also gutted so it did weigh less.

205/60R13 Fits great on a lowered car. Only rubs the front fender liner a tiny tiny bit at full lock. Fills up the wheel wells very nice.

13x6.0 +40 offset
